it is said that no other country on earth has as many castles per square mile i as wales. from roman garrisons and norman strongholds to saxon forts, the history of wales has been written in stone. visitors never have to search far
for the next tumbledown ruin or glowering medieval pile: wales has some 300-odd cas- tles to explore. a series of more than a dozen brooding castles in north wales were built, beginning in 1277, by england’s fearsome edward i (1272-1307) to impress and ulti- mately (in 1282) subdue the fiery welsh. crenellated caernarfon castle, located on the menai straight, was built on a site famous since roman times as the gateway to snowdonia. it was the greatest of edward’s castles: the official royal residence in north wales and the seat of government. its octag- onal 13th-century towers still dominate the town. edward ii, born here in 1284, was also given the honorary title of prince of wales here in 1301 as a gesture to placate the we’ people: it is a title conferred on the -??????????????????????????????
the 20th century: edward iii, presented by his father george v in 1911, and hrh prince charles, the current prince of wales, in 1969 -the latter amid great pomp and ceremony. for accommodations far less royal but oh so much more comfortable, wales’s best farmhouse hospitality can be found in this attraction-packed corner of north wales.

enough to have elicited the protection of the national trust in 1949, bodnant garden is one of the finest in all the british isles, and it’s no secret that the english are tough competi- tion in the botanical department. here is a pleasure ground for all seasons, covering nearly 100 acres arranged in formal italian- style terraces beginning at the manor house and leading down to a wild garden full of col- orful flowers, exotic shrubs, magnificent trees. and rock ensembles. depending on the time of year, visitors can enjoy dense dells of tho- dodendrons, camellias, or magnolias, old- fashioned bluebell woods, or the laburnam arch, a 180-foot-long tunneled walk where a mass of golden blossoms joins and meets over- head, best seen in late may and early june. laid out in 1875, bodnant is still the magnificent home of lord aberconway, president emeritus of the royal horticultural society, who obvi- ously could think of no finer place to retire. fancy yourself a peer of lord aberconway and check into bodysgallen hall in nearby llandudno, often mentioned as the best country house in wales. that this is a top-drawer operation is immediately apparent from the grand entranceway’s enormous, flawless flower arrangements, the massive fireplaces, and the lovely selection of fine antiques. tucked into the woods on the outskirts of snowdonia national park, the main house dates largely from the 17th century (incorporating a 13th- century lookout tower). many of the guest rooms have gorgeous views of the mountains of snowdonia and nearby conwy, a small medieval town of perfectly preserved walls that grew up around an important 13th-century edwardian castle. the small victorian seaside resort town of llandudno is just 1 mile away.. its pastel hotels lining the promenade and along the ornate gingerbread pier. resist the open-air restaurants promising fresh seafood for at least one dinner at bodysgallen.
